Defense Veterans Youth Patriotism

Fellow Legionnaires,

As you all know, we had our Post elections at the last meeting and I just want to thank you for your continued confidence in not only myself, but also Rap Brown, Ernie Florig and Jimmy Land. Our priority first and foremost, is for the “Betterment of the Post.” On 25 May, we met at Sunset Hills Cemetery for the Memorial Day Ceremony. I have one word for this year’s event, “Outstanding!” I was approached by several people, all of whom were very pleased with our speakers. We were honored to have Brig. Gen. Michael Longoria, of the 93rd AGOW at Moody as our Guest Speaker. We also were honored to have Mayor John Fretti and Lowndes County Commissioner, G. Robert Carter speak. I think attendance was even more this year than I’ve seen in the past 10 years! If you see Jimmy Traynor, Rap Brown, Jimmy Land, and many others, tell those thanks for their support. They hauled chairs, set up the area and assisted with the activities. Also, Miss Betty and the Kitchen Crew did a fantastic job making the lunch meal after the ceremony. No one left hungry! As usual, a Job Well Done! One of the things we did at the last Executive meeting was to meet initially at the Cell Tower on the corner of Bemiss Rd and Woodrow Wilson, behind the new CVS Drug Store. We wanted to see what it looked like up close and what size “footprint” it made. The design is nice, but the space is certainly in question. After our next meeting with Southland Communications, we’ll be ready to bring it to the membership. I also asked for volunteers at the last general membership meeting to sit on the Constitution and By-Laws Committee. I have one now, but I still need two more. If anyone is interested in helping update the documents that guide our organization, please contact me or Ernie. There will be two board members in addition to three from the general membership. This is the only way I know to get input from the rest of the Post. Don’t forget about our 4th of July Run. We’ll be giving Todd Smoot of “Get Active” a hand in crowd and traffic control for the runners. This year, the run will take place from 5 points to the Court House. We’ll need volunteers to help stop traffic for runners up and down Patterson Street. I’ll be looking forward to seeing you there. Lastly, the Post Executive Board will meet on 15 Jun at 5 pm, unless there’s a change. Please call the Post for any change to the meeting. All members are welcome. As always, from the Post Executive Committee and I, thank you for your continued support.

Thanks Again

"For God and Country,"  Ed Kent
