Fellow
Legionnaires,
Our August meeting, in my humble opinion, was
one of the very best yet. Last year we
conducted the first Post Everlasting Ceremony.
The first ceremony did not have the required
elements for a good ceremony. I promised the
next one would have quality. Several Post
members came to me and asked to form an Honor
Guard. I could not pass up this opportunity. An
Honor Guard was formed with members April
Welter, Henrietta Traynor, Cathy Florig, Rod
Pedersen, Alex Vega, Nerma Dave, Zee Osuigwe,
Clayton Roberts, and led by JoAnn Rofulowitz.
The Honor Guard immediately began to practice
for the upcoming Post Everlasting Ceremony.
Their dedication to practice was evident at the
Post Everlasting Ceremony. I would have them
compete against any Honor Guard in Valdosta or
the State of Georgia. I personally thank each of
you for your outstanding performance. Theres
nothing more moving than to participate in a
ceremony honoring our fallen heroes. I have
asked the Honor Guard to Post and Retrieve our
Colors at each meeting. When you see a member of
the Honor Guard, thank him/her for their
contributions and an excellent Post Everlasting
Ceremony. Thanks again. I recently received a
note from Charles and Jennipher Hubbard thanking
the Post for supporting their granddaughter,
Brittany Chadwick. Brittney won one of the six
$1,000 Department of Georgia Scholarships. When
you see Charles, give him a pat on the back.
These scholarships are based on grade point
average. Brittany had a 4.0714 grade point
average. Great work Brittany During the last
Post Executive meeting, the decision was made to
suspend the free first year membership to our
active duty military. This program is designed
to bring in new membership and promote the
Legion family. Rather than completely dropping
this program, an active duty military applicant
dues fee was set at $10.00. This will take a
little off the fiscal burden of the Post. For
the record, I don't agree with it, because I
think one has to spend money to make money. The
Executive Committee has spoken. Remember, you'll
receive a polo Shirt with the embroidered
American Legion emblem for every 5 new members
you recruit. Rap Brown has volunteered to
conduct the Post's first raffle. If you have an
idea about what would be good to raffle off,
please notify Rap or any member of the Post
Executive Committee. The Post needs a raffle
committee. Volunteers are needed to staff the
committee. Anyone who could serve as chairman of
the committee or be a member, please contact us.
There are 14 of us on the Post Executive
Committee, and we can only do so much. We need
your help. If you have any ideas about something
you'd like to have done around the Post, let us
know. As I said earlier, we need good ideas. Our
next Post Executive Committee meeting will be at
5PM, 21 September. Please call the Post for any
change to the meeting. All members are welcome.
As always the Post Executive Committee and I
thank you for your continued support.
"For God and Country," Ed
Kent
