Defense Veterans Youth Patriotism

Fellow Legionnaires,

If you had closed your eyes and stood in the Legion Hall on this past meeting night, you’d have thought you were at a Wednesday Night Church Supper! I can’t even remember what food everyone brought, but there was a lot taken back home! Thanks to everyone who attended the meeting and certainly those who brought the covered dishes. Everyone raved about it! The only problem was cleanup and dishes. Next time, we’ll have to plan a bit better AND as usual we had enough volunteers to get it done thanks to Joann Brown, Nina Carpenter, Claus Von Zittwitz, and Tommy Hightower. Thanks again for a great job and taking initiative. You don’t want to miss the next meeting for several reasons, the first and foremost it’s the American Legion’s 91st Birthday! Second, we’ll also be honoring our very own Marcus Haynes for Firefighter of the Year and Vernotis Williams for Policeman of the Year and presenting them both with an award. Third, we’ll be presenting a few Certificates of Appreciation and last but not least, I will be conducting a Swearing-In Ceremony for one of the newest Officers in the United States Army, Chante Greene. She’s being commissioned in the Army Nurse Corps and will have her family present for the occasion. Please be there. What an honor!
We’ve also requested renewal of our Raffle License and the plan is to start back sometime in March. One thing we learned this past year is we (the Executive Board) can’t do it alone. I will be establishing a Raffle Committee which will be headed by the Finance Officer, Rap Brown and four appointed Post members. So, what I’m asking for are four volunteers to help plan and execute our raffling endeavors. If you’re interested, let me, Rap or anyone on the Post Executive Committee know and we’ll plan to meet within the month of March.
Our Memorial Day Ceremony will be coming up in May. I’m heading up the planning committee and we’ll need assistance with this as well. As you know, Post 13 has taken the lead on these programs, having said that, we will be asking for more support from the membership. There are already folks offering to help and we couldn’t have done many of the things we’ve accomplished over the past 6 months without it, such as the Constitution and By Laws and the first Post Raffle. I really appreciate it and will call again.
We are in the early stages of planning for the 2010 Veterans Day program. There’s a lot to do and it shouldn’t be too hard with nearly 728 members! By the way, if anyone was wondering about the Oratorical Contest, we didn’t have one. We contacted four of our local high schools and initially had six contestants which went to three, then to one. On February 11th I called the contest off due to lack of participation. I wonder if it’s the youth, rather than the school leadership, something to think about anyway. Our next Post Executive Board will meet on March 15th at 1700 hours unless there’s a change. Please call the Post for any change to the meeting. All members are welcome. As always, from the Post Executive Committee and I, thank you for your continued support.

Thanks again,

"For God and Country,"  Ed Kent
