Fellow Legionnaires

Come out and meet your new leadership elected for the Legion Year 2010 – 2011! They are Commander Ernie Florig, Senior-Vice Commander Ed Kent, Junior Vice-Commander for Programs Jimmy Land, Junior Vice-Commander for Activities Robert Carpenter and Finance Officer Richard Brown. Congratulations to each of our new officers and best wishes for a successful upcoming year! Again, we have to thank Miss Betty and the Kitchen Crew for a fantastic Spaghetti dinner. They NEVER let us down!! We were again honored to find out that our own Fireman, Marcus Haynes, has won National Fireman of the Year! Wow! Big thanks to our Executive Board, especially Sr. Vice-Commander Ernie Florig, for pursuing this and the Police Officer of the Year. Great things happen when someone takes interest in a program and run with it! We are pleased to announce that our Historian, April Welter, is the new 2010-2011 Commander for the 12th District. Ernie will serve as her Senior Vice-Commander for the upcoming year. Folks, this is what makes me proud to be associated with Valdosta Post 13, the willingness of our members to step up and take charge when needed. Another super event occurred on 31 May at Sunset Hills Cemetery. We honored our fallen Veterans with a Memorial service with Mr. Rod Casey as the keynote speaker as well as our newest member Col. Bill DeMaso Vice-Commander for the 23rd Fighter Wing, Lowndes County Commissioner G. Robert Carter and City of Valdosta Mayor Fretti. There were approximately 300 in attendance even with the threat of rain. A hearty and grateful “Thank You” to the 20 to 25 volunteers (mostly from Post 13), who came out the day before and placed flags on our Veterans graves.
I encourage everyone to attend the next meeting. We will have the Swearing-In Ceremony for our new officers and if I were a betting man, I’d say we’ll be sworn in by a brand new Department Senior Vice-Commander from our Post. You don’t want to miss this, so be there and show your support! I also want to take a moment to thank each of our members for your support over the past 3 years. Although there have certainly been ups and downs (many more ups), I couldn’t have performed my duties without the total support of you and the Post Executive Committee. Thank you all! With every new year we have new challenges from National and Department. This upcoming year will be no different. I challenge you to support Ernie and give him 110% of your backing. I’ve grown to know Ernie over the past several years as both a friend and a veteran. You all have made a very wise choice for your new commander. Our next Post Executive Board will meet on 19 Jul at 1730 hours unless there’s a change. Please call the Post for any change to the meeting. ALL members are welcome. As always, from the Post Executive Committee and I, thank you for your continued support.

"For God and Country,"  Ed Kent

PS: We had a very successful Flag Retirement Ceremony with the Daughters of the American Revolution present and providing finger foods. The Valdosta Fire Department helped watch the fires and then put them out for us. On 26 Jun, at 1000 hrs, Marcus Haynes was honored with a standing ovation for receiving the Department and National Fireman of the Year Award! We were very proud of him. Please don’t forget the 4th of July Run. We need to give Todd Smoot all the help we can. He’s given the proceeds from the run to the Lowndes Veterans Council each year to assist our veterans in need. He’s given over $12,000.00 in the past 4 years! Let’s show him our appreciation and support and be there at 0630 in the Winn Dixie parking lot at Five Points. It’s easy work. Handing out water and blocking traffic. Also, remember the Swearing-In Ceremony on 13 Jul.
